The Gym for Fat People

I’m a chubster, I’ll be the first to admit it. I got a Buddha belly. For those that want one, it’s real easy to do: don’t exercise and eat right. In hindsight, maybe all those cans and bottles of high caffeine soda weren’t the best idea (I started when Jolt was the only player on the block for high caffeinated drinks and it only got crazier).
I’ve been going to the gym lately and trying to get into a routine. So, starting to go 3 days a week to lift some weights. Doing the push, pull, and legs routine. It’s pretty easy to do and I end the week with heavy squats (my favorite exercise). I’m not trying to overcommit myself in this endeavor as that always leads to eventual failure. So, starting small.

That’s cool that you are getting healthy. We too are working on that. Mark has a boflex in the garage that has about a four year coat of dust on it and I have an eliptical that is still in the box that arrived six months ago. I could make the “we just haven’t had time for it” excuse, but we would just be kidding ourselves. That’s like saying, “Oh, I just didn’t have time to breathe.”
You would never drive a car that hadn’t been tuned up in years, so why do we expect our bodies to drive well without being tuned up? Unfortunately, the abuse doesn’t end there. We constantly put the wrong fuel in our tanks! Have you ever noticed how ugly bad food is? Hello?? That should be some indication that we shouldn’t be eating it. Fruits and veg are colorful and beautiful. Mark and I are trying our best to keep that in mind when it comes to eating. It’s tough, but we’ll get there. I have also been watching the show “I Can Make You Thin” on bravo for different techniques. Sounds cheese, but his techniques work. You can probably find the show on newsgroups. Another good motivator is “You Are What You Eat with Dr. Gillian McKeith” on BBC. She has a somewhat millitant approach, but you do learn more about food and nutrients. She has reformed some of the UK’s largest food offenders.
As far as the work outs go, it is best to start small. Build your way back up to avoid injury and strain. I like to do a five minute warm up on the tread. Just a brisk walk, almost jogging speed to get the heart pumping. Then I do some stretching to get loose for another five minutes. Then I go to whatever muscle group I am working on. My trainer said most important thing to do is change it up. Your muscles get used to the same excercise and then they are not challenged. You see more results from changing it up and doing the exercise properly. Use the mirror (even though you will look like one of THOSE guys). It really works
